In 1933, Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) stopped aging at just 29 years old. The coincidence of mysterious weather phenomena in a serious car accident ensured that Adaline's body would remain in its young form for all time to come. The following 80 years were lonely. Adaline missed out on one of the most important experiences: To love, which serves as a source of strength and happiness for other people. During this long period, she never allowed herself to get close to anyone. The fear that her secret would be revealed was always too great. The only constant was her daughter Flemming (Ellen Burstyn). But then a chance encounter catalyzes a change of heart. In the likeable philanthropist Ellis Jones (“Game of Thrones” star Michiel Huisman), Adaline meets a man who awakens her long-suppressed desire for love. Should she break her rule for his sake? Should she tell him about her unusual condition? When the truth threatens to come to light during a weekend with Ellis' parents (Harrison Ford & Kathy Becker), Adaline makes a far-reaching decision... “While the whole world dreams of eternal youth, “Forever Adaline” sheds light on the darker side of immortality. The love story itself, but also the questions the movie asks, are reminiscent of Nicholas Sparks (“Like a Single Day”): What does it mean to love someone if you can't grow old together? Doesn't life lose its meaning without death? What initially seems like a blessing turns out to be a curse on closer inspection. The fact that Lee Toland Krieger, who previously made the quirky relationship comedy “Celeste & Jesse”, tells the story without irony this time is what gives the film its nostalgic charm. The carefree way in which the director bends his story will divide the audience into two camps: While some will fall wholeheartedly under the film's spell, others will tear their hair out in disbelief. Krieger's film is great emotional cinema. As immortally beautiful and unreal as Adaline Bowman.” (cinema.de)
