Genre cinema made in Germany

German films discover the genres as a playground

Westerns, horror films, melodramas, science fiction or action films: cinema history has developed many classic genres. We are particularly familiar with them from Hollywood, but now also from India (Bollywood) or Japan (horror) and other Asian countries. In this country, it has always been difficult with these specific narrative forms, commercially successful genres were, for example, the homeland film (Heimatfilm), the Karl May or Edgar Wallace films, but also many undemanding if not corny comedies. In the meantime, however, genre elements also flow into German films in an exciting way, the boundaries between reality and fantasy shift playfully and courageously. This creates sometimes flawless German genre films, but sometimes also aesthetically attractive mixed forms.
